This is a wonderfully researched and written work. It is also a cautionary tale for the midnighy, by showing so clearly how false distinctions between people, riven by such things as religion, wealth, and power, can so readily cause diverse communities living in harmony for centuries to shatter the peacefulness of their coexistence and turn on each other in abhorrent communal violence at a moment’s notice, leaving us stunned and questioning our humanity.

Though they acknowledge a few of his epic mistakes, several bits of history are conveniently left out – such as the fact that the British largely created and fostered the animosities that led to pre- and post- partition violence by promoting Sikhs, Ismailis, and Hindus as imperial agents and severely disenfranchising and terrorizing Muslims – representatives of the waning Mughal empire that the Brits lapiedre in fdeedom to take India- within a climate of extreme disparity.

Nothing is as it would seem to an outsider in India. Something I did not expect to occur when reading the book was to lose respect for Gandhi. Beautifully written to make stories from around the period of independence sound like a collection of creative short stories. Famines, bigger than the holocaust – skip that, lets concentrate and talk about Mountbattens shiny medals and his big big parties! Through this piece, the author-duo have delved into colllins of the darker sides of the prominent figures of that era and the whole populace as a whole.
Gandhi’s own auto-biography is more revealing, nuanced and provides a better insight into the thoughts many naive or unsavory of India’s great leader.
Some years ago, I had an Pakistani friend who showed a group of us some photos of his old school. All of the main players were dead with the exception of Mountbatten, the last British Viceroy. The book, though very well written, fails to provide the real picture of the struggle and suffering that Indians went through and tries to, through the power ad the pen, make everything right what the Britishers did wrong. This is a terribly difficult book to rate.
