If Suzanne was truly innocent but not ignorant, in that she would accept what’s happening to her and yet try to fight against it, thinking things through and coming to conclusions on her own, then maybe I would buy into it; as it is, Diderot does not paint her as a realistic character. It has become one of the calugwrita important books from its age, written by one of the most important French authors of the time. Do yourself a favor and spend your time reading Rabelais. Although Diderot moved from Deism to atheism, “The Nun” is not quite an attack on religious belief and although generally anti-clerical, it is most specifically about the convent system in France and, generally, the right to self-determination. The reasons for reading this book are many, but its age and moralistic subject matter nevertheless makes sure that The Nun is still somewhat reserved for more particular tastes.
There is a difference between being ignorant and innocent as opposed to being ignorant and just plain stupid. His articles included many topics of the Enlightenment. Not a real pleasant read – however good to see that Sister Suzanne does stay “good” throughout the book.
The Nun takes us from a sadistic convent regime of starving and torture into a sumptuous world of desirous shephebes my coinage—hire me someone! Honestly don’t care about this book enough to write a proper review.
Then there are other points where Suzanne is scared of calugarits Mother Superior. This novel — in a sort of ledger form — was actually written many years before the stated publication date of Lots of the story was invented as a way of producing inflammatory charges against these institutions, which it certainly did.

The unstability of the Mother Superior makes itself more evident, and from diddrot she goes straight to delirium. He therefore warned his fellow philosophers against an overemphasis on mathematics and against the blind optimism that sees in the growth of physical knowledge an automatic social and human progress. A name that frequently resonated in my ears during French Literature classes but never sparked my interest until I read a review of calugarrita book by one of my goodreads friends Joselito, and I have been fascinated by this book ever since.
Trivia About The Nun. Interesting, but tiring to read. We also have some slight soap opera, concerning the jealousy of Therese, because Suzanne is the new favorite of the Mother Superior. She has incorporated some manners proper of nuns but not the religiosity, not even one bit. This tale does not make for easy reading since you have to take yourself back about two-hundred years to find a style that was popular at the time. And the letters of Madame Madin all add spice to the tale. All in all, it’s not a bad read; just not something I’d recommend if a reader is looking for something to get invested in.
