I liked this book especially because, although Balzac doesn’t do badly with the romance he builds his novel around, he doesn’t really have much patience for it. High society, intrigues, love, more intrigues, bankers throwing fortunes on their passions, criminals patronizing poets, spies advising lovers and politicians, duchesses behaving like courtesans and professional prostitutes sacrificing their lives for aristocratic gigolos – this is all in the book.

Esther’s obsessive “love” for him – everyone’s obsession with him, in fact, seemed completely unfounded in every way. I’ve now read this masterpiece three times. The scam Jacques Collin has in play is wonderfully complex: The one constant is that I continue to find in Balzac one of a handful of super-greats.

In essence, all daughters of Paris when they fall in love—be they rich or poor—experience and inhabit the highs and lows of the courtesan. Deep inside, however, they love and hate, cherish and condemn, and often sell their souls to maintain the facade of perception.

Balzac’s lack of control, and his inability to make Esther and Lucien tragic heroes, do prevent A Harlot High and Low from being a great novel, but it’s nevertheless a very good one.

Balzac mi ha stregata. The law, the constabulary, the police employ much the same number of people, is that not strange?
